Gem-Quality Diamonds Unearthed in Chhattisgarh, Raising Hopes of a New Diamond Province in India

A promising diamond discovery in Chhattisgarh has sparked optimism about the emergence of a new diamond-bearing region in India. Preliminary exploration at the Baloda Belmundi Diamond Block in Mahasamund district, around 70 kilometres from Raipur, has resulted in the recovery of five rough diamonds weighing a combined 1.22 carats.

The discovery was announced by NMDC-CMDC Limited, the joint venture between the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) and the Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC). The diamonds were recovered after processing nearly 200 tonnes of bulk sample material collected during the initial phase of exploration.

The exploration programme included extensive stream sediment sampling, geophysical surveys and approximately 500 metres of exploratory drilling. The extracted material was subsequently transported to NMDC's Diamond Processing Plant in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, where the diamonds were recovered.

As the joint venture currently does not have a secure gemstone storage facility in Chhattisgarh, the recovered diamonds have been transferred to NMDC's secured vault in Panna for safekeeping.

Gem and Industrial Quality Stones Recovered

Among the five diamonds recovered are two gem-quality white diamonds, weighing 0.19 carats and 0.06 carats respectively. Their transparency and quality make them suitable for use in fine jewellery.

The remaining three stones are classified as industrial-grade diamonds, comprising one yellowish diamond weighing 0.32 carats and two brownish diamonds weighing 0.59 carats and 0.06 carats. These stones are typically used in industrial applications such as precision cutting and drilling tools.

Early Results Considered Highly Encouraging

Geologists and mining experts view the presence of gem-quality diamonds at such an early stage of bulk sampling as an encouraging indicator. Historically, several commercially successful diamond deposits around the world were initially identified through similarly modest recoveries during preliminary exploration.

The discovery suggests that the Mahasamund region could potentially host a larger diamond-bearing system, although further exploration and resource evaluation will be required to determine its commercial viability.

Potential Boost for India's Diamond Mining Sector

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai welcomed the discovery, describing it as a significant milestone for Chhattisgarh's mining sector. He noted that the find has the potential to attract investment, generate employment and contribute to the state's economic development.

The development is particularly significant for India's diamond industry, which is globally recognised for cutting and polishing diamonds but continues to rely heavily on imported rough diamonds for manufacturing.

If future exploration confirms economically viable reserves, Mahasamund could emerge as an important domestic source of rough diamonds, strengthening India's upstream mining capabilities while supporting the country's gem and jewellery sector.

NMDC-CMDC Limited has reportedly sought guidance from the state government regarding the next phase of exploration and the development of the project.
