On the sidelines of the 41st World Diamond Congress 2026 in Singapore, Dr. Wuyi Wang, Senior Vice President of Research & Identification at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), spoke exclusively about the importance of scientific research, advancements in diamond identification technology, and the fundamental differences between natural and laboratory-grown diamonds.
In this exclusive interaction, Dr. Wang highlighted the role of collaboration, research, and innovation in reinforcing consumer confidence and supporting the long-term growth of the global natural diamond industry.
Q: We are at the 41st World Diamond Congress in Singapore, one of the most significant gatherings of the global natural diamond industry. What are your views on the importance of this Congress and its role in shaping the future of the industry?
"From my point of view as a scientist, any opportunity for the industry to share scientific information and for those of us devoted to research to discuss what we have learned with the broader industry community is very beneficial. As technology enables new discoveries, our understanding of the fundamental characteristics of gems continues to advance. This knowledge will help the industry continue to be successful."
Q: Could you explain the key differentiating factors in the constitution and characteristics of natural diamonds versus laboratory-grown diamonds?
"The key difference is how they are formed, and how those very different origins, one deep in the earth, the other in a factory or laboratory, leave well-known, detectable characteristics that allow GIA to differentiate natural and laboratory-grown diamonds with complete certainty."
Q: How important is technology in the identification of diamonds today? Could you elaborate on the latest advancements and how they are strengthening confidence across the industry?
"The technology we use is important as it supports the expertise and experience of scientists and gemologists. Every advancement, every discovery helps build confidence within the industry and with consumers. Preserving that trust is GIA's most important task."
